Happy SAAD

Posted by danvirion on August 1, 2006

Belated happy SAAD really! That’s right, System Administrator Appreciation Day just went by… and I wonder if it was just a coincidence that HJ and I were called in to look at two crashed servers just recently. Now, I haven’t been an SA in a long long time, but for those of you who are wiring networks and reconfiguring clusters around the world till date, thanks on behalf of all the clueless nerds working in your labs - thanks cos I know they won’t even recognize you are around, till something goes wrong.

In celebration, here’s a mail someone had fwded to me, on SAAD a few years back:

The System Administrator – User relationship is like that of a doctor and a patient… this is not a happy relationship, cos sadly, things often go this way:

(At doctor’s office, phone rings, doctor answers)Dr.: Yes, how can I help you?

patient: Doc, I have a headache

Dr.: OK, take two asprins and call me in the morning

(Hour later)

Pa: Doc, I still have a headache

Dr.: OK, take a stronger tablet, and put some cold compresses on your forehead.

(hour later)

Pa: Doc, the headache wont go away!

Dr.: Strange. OK, come here to my clinic, let me have a look…

A few minutes later, the door opens and the patient walks in. He is a gruesome sight – someone had rammed a woodcutter’s axe into the top of his head, and he was bleeding profusely.

Dr.: What on earth? Why didnt you tell me what the real problem was?????

Pa: But I did, Doc! I *told* you I have a headache!

  1. Cute, and true.

Unfortunately, it also goes the other way, like in your later story (help-desk people assume you’re an idiot no matter what you tell them you already did).

So, I have a question for you…what are the good parts about being a SysAdmin?

@wsb: ummm, lets see… u get to play with all the new toys before the nerds crowd up on it, and u get to put a quota on anyone u hate! :-)

but honestly, being Sys Admin is a cool job… I loved it!
